How to Identify and Dissolve the Core Belief Driving Your Insecurity

Every chronic insecurity in a man's life is maintained by a core belief operating below conscious awareness. Learn how to surface this belief, examine its origins, and dissolve its authority.

The Architecture of Chronic Insecurity

Every pattern of chronic insecurity has the same structure: a core belief about the self, operating below conscious awareness, that is continuously generating the insecurity response in contexts that are relevant to the belief's content.

The man with chronic social anxiety typically has a core belief along the lines of "people will see I am inadequate and reject me." The man with chronic professional insecurity typically has a core belief along the lines of "my capability is insufficient and will be exposed." The man with chronic relationship insecurity typically has a core belief along the lines of "I am not ultimately lovable by someone who knows me well."

These beliefs are not conclusions reached consciously through careful examination. They are conclusions absorbed early, in circumstances that provided the evidence for them at the time, and maintained by the filtering and interpretation of subsequent experience.

Surfacing the Core Belief

The core belief is identified by following the anxiety response backward to its assumption. When the insecurity activates, the question is: what would this be evidence of about me? Not "what am I afraid of?" but "what does the feared thing prove about me?"

The man who is afraid of public speaking and follows the anxiety backward typically discovers that the feared thing is not the speaking itself but what being visibly bad at speaking would prove: "I am not intelligent enough," or "I am fundamentally less capable than people think," or some similar core belief.

Once identified explicitly, the core belief can be examined as a belief rather than as a fact.

Dissolving the Belief's Authority

Examine the evidence. Core beliefs feel like facts because they were adopted in circumstances that provided compelling evidence for them at the time, and because subsequent experience has been filtered to support them. Explicit examination of the actual evidence, particularly the evidence that contradicts the belief, is the first step toward its dissolution.

Examine the origin. Most core insecurity beliefs were formed in circumstances where the man was young, less capable, and dependent on environments he did not choose. The belief that formed in those circumstances may have been a reasonable response to those specific conditions. It is not necessarily accurate about the man in his current circumstances.

Accumulate contradicting evidence through action. The most reliable dissolution of a core insecurity belief is the accumulation of behavioral evidence that contradicts it. The man who believes he is socially inadequate and who has a hundred experiences of successful social engagement has evidence that progressively challenges the belief's authority.
